    Grade Crossing Litigation

    (Rescheduled from March 29, 2023)

    "Grade crossing litigation" arises after a collision between a train (or some other kind of on-track railroad equipment) and a vehicle at a highway-railroad grade crossing. Grade crossing litigation is unique and carries with it interesting issues of fact investigation, discovery, and legal implication. This presentation will address the nature of grade crossing litigation, the railroad's duty at crossings, the motorist's duty at crossings, and preemption issues.


    Lyn Robbins, Esq.


    Lyn Robbins is President and Co-Owner of Robbins Travis PLLC in Southlake, Texas, where he practices law, focusing on railroad litigation. Prior to forming this firm with Susan Travis, Lyn was from 2003 through end of 2015 senior general attorney for BNSF personal injury claims litigation, major damage collection litigation, and appellate matters, with additional responsibility for commercial dispute resolution, arbitration, and some employment issues. From 1990-2003, he practiced with Gullett, Sanford, Robinson & Martin, PLLC in Nashville, Tennessee, litigating hundreds of cases, trying more than forty cases to verdict, and handling dozens of appeals with multiple arguments before both state and federal appellate courts and briefing before the United States Supreme Court.

     From 2006-2019, he was an adjunct professor of law at Baylor School of Law, teaching both Basic and Advanced Trial Advocacy Skills. He has taught at the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel's College of Trial Advocacy since its inception in 2008. He is a frequent speaker at Continuing Legal Education presentations around the country.

    He received his J.D., cum laude, 1990 from Baylor School of Law, Waco, Texas, where he was a Leon Jaworski Scholar and the Lead Articles Editor of the Baylor Law Review.

    Nancy L. Jordahl, ACP, FRP, FCP, is a litigation paralegal at Weinberg Wheeler Hudgins Gunn & Dial. She is Secretary/Treasurer for the Paralegal Section of the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA), immediate Past-President of the Central Florida Paralegal Association (CFPA), and member of the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA). She also currently serves as a member of the Florida Registered Paralegal (FRP) Enrichment Committee. She is the author of two chapters in NALA's Certified Paralegal Exam Fundamentals (Torts and Clarity of Expression).

Veronica has worked at some of the top law firms in the region as well as in-house, serving as a staff attorney for an insurance syndicate and as general counsel for a corporation. She is licensed to practice law in all state courts in Texas and Colorado. 

      Veronica graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder wiht a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with Business Emphasis, magna cum laude. Subsequently, she earned her law degree from University of Colorado Law School.

Mishty will be sharing while on the panel her input with the male paralegals her concept of "Neutrality and Bias relating to Male Paralegals Versus Female Paralegals." Mishty is an adjunct professor within Dallas College's Paralegal Program, Mishty has taught civil procedure, real property, business organizations, advanced legal research and writing, legal research and writing, torts, family law topics, intellectual property and mediation. Part of what makes her a dynamic teacher is her wealth of work experience. Mishty is a skilled attorney with over 17 years of practice experience in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. She co-founded the Dallas law firm of LaSusa & Deb, PLLC and specializes in providing legal counsel to small and large businesses as well as individuals. She has worked on multiple litigation cases for business, entrepreneurs, and non-profits and is an active advocate for alternative dispute conflict resolution methods. She specializes in structuring complex business transactions and investment deals as well as international issues with India. She is currently patent bar licensed and holds current certificates in mediation. She is a mediator with the Texas Department of Insurance and has experience mediating a wide variety of cases from divorces to real estate disputes, complex board litigations, debt settlements, personal injury cases, and much more. 

      As a patron for women in business, she is also the CEO and Founder of the Sharks In Heels® Series. Sharks in Heels®, Inc. is an informative social networking organization geared towards connecting, educating, and training women on becoming the future generation of successful women entrepreneurs. Each year the organization puts on four educational workshops and a business panel discussion. Mishty and her organization have been featured on Startup Dallas, Voyage Dallas, Fox 4 Good Day, and the Dallas Business Journal. Mishty has conducted training sessions for junior attorneys, CLE classes for colleagues, and mentored owners at many events including Dallas Start-Up Week's Women's Edition, Cookies and Content at the Grove, Women's Tech Co., and Dallas Bloggers' Collective. In her spare time, Mishty loves to travel the world and believes that diversity and a global world view are the keys to understanding her clients' needs and connecting with others. Mishty will discuss the understanding aspects of the importance of neutrality and biases as it relates to Male Paralegals versus Female Paralegals. She will discuss different types of bias, and preparation of strategies to counteract bias, solutions when those strategies don't work.
